But how much depends on the conditions of your soil and the type of compost you’re using. Keep in mind that not all compost is created equal.
Next, cover the layer with soil. Add nitrogen-rich materials (greens), followed by soil. Repeat the alternating layers of greens and browns until the pile reaches 2 to 3 feet high. Soak the pile at its start and water periodically; its consistency should be that of a damp (not wet) sponge.
To successfully compost, you need moisture in your compost pile. Ideally, you want about 45% to 60% moisture. To assess this, just grab a handful of compost and squeeze it.
